DAVx⁵ 4.0 has been released!

New core feature: Live and remote access for your WebDAV files is now available. DAVx⁵ offers a seamless integration of your files in your Android! This feature is accessible via DAVx5 → Tools → WebDAV mounts.

• New UI for WebDAV files access
• WebDAV: New notifications when streaming files, or when making other operations like upload/download/copy.
• WebDAV: Now shows quotas for the directory (when provided by the server)
• CardDAV: fixed a few bugs when using contact groups

Current features:

• You can access all your remote files directly without downloading it to the device:
  • You can download, upload, rename, copy, move and delete any of your remote files and manage them as it would be a local storage or you can even copy files from one WebDAV storage to another.
  • DAVx⁵ offers you the possibility to directly stream files of any size (with random access on Android 8+). For example you can directly watch your 65GB 4K/8K video on the device (however for this a good network connection like LAN/WiFi recommended ;-) You can even jump to any position of that video! ). But you can also simply stream your music or do remote work.
• The WebDAV mount is fully integrated into Android, so you can send / attach files easily from within all apps that support the standard files browser. For example: send a friend a meme from your remotely stored memes collection in Threema, Signal or your Jabber client. Send a video or PDF as an attachment in your EMail app. And more.
• Live editing is also possible (only whole-file PUT, no random access at the moment). Open an existing text file to note some things and save it directly on the server.

Tested providers:

• Nextcloud, Synology, owncloud, KolabNow, eGroupware, fastmail, box.com, GMX, Yandex.

Set up WebDAV in DAVx⁵:

1. From the navigation drawer use Tools → WebDAV mounts.
2. Create a mount. Enter the webDAV URL (don't forget http:// or https://) with your username and password.
3. Click "Mount". An entry with your data will appear.
4. The mount is now available in the system.

To access the files, use a file manager:

• AOSP My Files (for example pre-installed on Lineage OS devices): you will see the mounts directly in the list and can start browsing and managing your files.
• Material Files [F-Droid / Google Play]: Click "Add storage" → "External storage" →Open the drawer in Material files →Choose a WebDAV mount** from the upcoming list → Click "Use this Folder". It will be added as a shortcut in Material files.
• It should work with any other file manager that supports Storage Access Framework. Unfortunately, it seems that most vendors don't implement that (yet).

You can also open files directly from apps which support the Storage Access Framework.

DAVx⁵ 4.2: is here!

• New integration: jtx Board integration: Sync Journals, Notes (VJOURNAL) and Tasks (VTODO) with jtx Board¹ is now possible. jtx Board is using only open standards and open protocols! If you want to try it: choose jtx Board in the DAVx5 settings → Tasks integration
• New function: SOCKS proxy support for .onion URLs with Orbot/Tor
• allows saving high resolution contact photos

¹ jtx Board is a separately developed open-source app that has been in the works for almost a year in close collaboration with the team behind DAVx5. For the first time ever the VJournal component has been implemented in a mobile app and you'll be able to synchronize your protocols/journals/meeting minutes with your own server. Also VTodo has been implemented in jtx Board - it is used to sync your tasks. A great advantage of jtxBoard is, that you can link notes tasks and journals with each other, having a really flexible tool to store and track your data. For example you can track the outcome of a meeting, and different persons can then add notes and tasks to it, linking them to the meeting entry. A lot more is possible! Check it out!

DAVx⁵ 4.2 is a significant milestone for future releases of DAVx⁵ because jtx Board can serve us as platform to extend the basic possibilities of Android (for example fields of CardDAV and CalDAV that Android does not offer in it's contact and calendar storage, like attachments and professional event scheduling).

  • We're switching away from the Android sync framework. WorkManager offers a lot more control over the sync process and is no longer depending on the Android base system anymore. This has been very hard work below the surface for several months, since large parts of DAVx⁵ had to be refactored and rewritten for this. Currently the WorkManager is only being used when you click the sync button inside the app. The scheduled sync will still be triggered by the Android sync framework. We will unify this at a later time.

• Due to Google enforcing new restrictions we had to remove the "Show foreground notification" option. It will maybe come back in a different "form".

We introduced this option quite some time ago for Android 12 and lower (primarily for Xiaomi and a few other manufacturers that use ridiculously aggressive power saving mechanics). We also especially needed this before we switched to the Android WorkManager Framework last summer/autumn which is now the intended way of handling background jobs. This was a huge re-work of the core of DAVx5 - almost invisible for everyone, but it is a very important thing for a more robust and controllable sync. So normally this option is not as useful nowadays anyway.

We would have keeped it, but Google wants to get rid of the FOREGROUND_SYNC permission in general, and we are not eligible to use it, so we had no other choice to skip it for now. We will make some kind of substitute - in form of a "long wanted feature" by other users. A DAVx5 widget. This has the bonus of bringing the app into foreground/activity too and will act mostly as the same as the permanent notification option (if it is really needed on some devices). If you want to discuss more please open an extra thread in the discussions. These are the release notes ;-)

Overview:
We continued to rewrite a lot of the old code to Compose.
Workers for background sync should now work more efficiently, without using too much background sync quota (limited by Android). Hopefully this will trigger syncs more accurately to the scheduled sync intervals.
Read-only Events will now be dismissed on upload (solves some errors with only locally set changes of the event, like Reminders/Alarms).
We improved our testing framework.
