Abstract = {The evaluation of the sum of $N$ Gaussians at $M$ points in space arises as a computational task in diffusion, fluid dynamics, finance, and, more generally, in mollification. The work required for direct evaluation grows like the product $NM$, rendering large-scale calculations impractical. we present an improved version of the fast Gauss transform [L. Greengard and J. Strain, SIAM J. Sci. Comput. 12(1):79--94 (1991)], which evaluates the sum of $N$ Gaussians at $M$ arbitrarily distributed points in $O(N+M)$ work, where the constant of proportionality depends only on the precision required. Teh new scheme is based on a diagonal form for translating Hermite expansions and is significantly faster than previous versions.},

Abstract = {SPH is a powerful mesh free method that is now able to solve very complex multi-physics flow and deformation problems in a broad number of fields. This paper concentrates on the use of SPH to simulate a broad range of complex industrial fluid flow problems. These include free surface fluid flow for the generation of digital content, geophysical flows such as volcanic lava flows and tsunamis, several types of die casting (gravity, high pressure and ingot casting), resin transfer moulding and flow in porous media, mixing of particulates in liquid, pyrometallurgy and slurry flow in semi-autogenous grinding mills. The strengths and weaknesses of SPH will be explored and future opportunities for using the method to make major modelling advances are discussed.},

Abstract = {We describe TREEASPH, a new code to evolve self-gravitating fluids, both with and without a collisionless component. In TREEASPH, gravitational forces are computed from a hierarchical tree algorithm (TREEcode), while hydrodynamic properties are computed by using a SPH method that includes the delh correction terms appearing when the spatial resolution h(t, r) is not a constant. Another important feature, which considerably increases the code efficiency on sequential and vectorial computers, is that time-stepping is performed from a PEC scheme (Predict-Evaluate-Correct) modified to allow for individual timesteps. Some authors have previously noted that the delh correction terms are needed to avoid the introduction on simulations of a non-physical entropy. By using TREEASPH we show here that, in cosmological simulations, this non-physical entropy has a negative sign. As a consequence, when the delh terms are neglected, the density peaks associated to shock fronts are overestimated. This in turn results in an overestimated efficiency of star-formation processes. Abstract = {This paper is devoted to the study of the convergence of weighted particle approximation of nonlinear multidimensional conservation laws. For Euler equations the method is closely related to the smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method. Extension of the original algorithm is proposed. We use approximate Riemann solvers instead of artificial viscosity in order to stabilize the scheme. The mathematical analysis is performed by connecting this new approach with the finite volume scheme. Convergence of the approximate solution in L-loc(p) (p < infinity) towards the unique weak entropy solution of the Cauchy problem is obtained in the scalar nonlinear case by using uniqueness of measure valued solutions.},

Abstract = {We develop a new algorithm for the fast evaluation of linear combinations of radial functions based on the recently developed fast Fourier transform at nonequispaced knots. For smooth kernels, e.g. the Gaussian, our algorithm requires $O(N+M)$ arithmetic operations. In case of singular kernels an additional regularization procedure must be incorporated and the algorithm has the arithmetic complexity $O(N \log{\sqrt{N}}+M)$ or $O(M \log{|sqrt{M}}+N)$ if either the points yj or the points xk are reasonably uniformly distributed. We prove error estimates to obtain clues about the choice of the involved parameters and present numerical examples for various singular and smooth kernels in two dimensions.},

Abstract = {In this paper we consider domain decomposition methods for solving the radial basis function interpolation equations. There are three interwoven threads to the paper. The first thread provides good ways of setting up and solving small- to medium-sized radial basis function interpolation problems. These may occur as subproblems in a domain decomposition solution of a larger interpolation problem. The usual formulation of such a problem can suffer from an unfortunate scale dependence not intrinsic in the problem itself. This scale dependence occurs, for instance, when fitting polyharmonic splines in even dimensions. We present and analyze an alternative formulation, available for all strictly conditionally positive definite basic functions, which does not suffer from this drawback, at least for the very important example previously mentioned. This formulation changes the problem into one involving a strictly positive definite symmetric system, which can be easily and efficiently solved by Cholesky factorization. The second section considers a natural domain decomposition method for the interpolation equations and views it as an instance of von Neumann's alternating projection algorithm. Here the underlying Hilbert space is the reproducing kernel Hilbert space induced by the strictly conditionally positive definite basic function. We show that the domain decomposition method presented converges linearly under very weak nondegeneracy conditions on the possibly overlapping subdomains. The last section presents some algorithmic details and numerical results of a domain decomposition interpolatory code for polyharmonic splines in 2 and 3 dimensions. This code has solved problems with 5 million centers and can fit splines with 10,000 centers in approximately 7 seconds on very modest hardware.},
