With the inclusion of build metadata, the variables available for use and the mechanism by which they are set should be clearly documented.

Various fixes and better codegen (#54)

1. make basepath config optional
2. fixes log level default value in config
3. catch nil custom config
4. make hooks and downstream config optional
5. better codegen for sysl applications
