<head>Biographical / Historical</head>
<p>Katherine Dunham (b. 1909) was a dancer, choreographer, and anthropologist. She founded her own dance company, choreographed for stage and film around the world, and traveled and studied dance throughout her life. Her choreography includes productions of <emph>Cabin in the Sky</emph>, <emph>Tropical Revue</emph>, <emph>Carib Song</emph>, <emph>Bal Negre</emph>, and <emph>Aida</emph>. In Hollywood, she and her choreography were featured in such films as <emph>Star Spangled Rhythm</emph> (1942), <emph>Stormy Weather</emph> (1943), and <emph>Pardon My Sarong</emph> (1942). She received a degree in Social Anthropology at the University of Chicago and went on to publish many papers and memoirs, and frequently gave talks about anthropology at universities and scholarly institutions. In her lifetime, Dunham choreographed over 90 performances, created her own dance method, and established many arts and performance centers, including the Katherine Dunham School of Cultural Arts, the Katherine Dunham Performance Art Training Center and the Center for Arts and Humanities in East St. Louis, IL. Alumni of her school include Eartha Kitt, James Dean, Gregory Peck, Jose Ferrer, Jennifer Jones, Shelley Winters, Sidney Poitier, Shirley MacLaine and Warren Beatty. Katherine Dunham passed away on May 21, 2006, in New York City, NY.</p>

<p>Collections are processed to a variety of levels, depending on the work necessary to make them usable, their perceived research value, the availability of staff, competing priorities, and whether or not further accruals are expected. The library attempts to provide a basic level of preservation and access for all collections, and does more extensive processing of higher priority collections as time and resources permit. These materials have been arranged and described according to national and local standards. For more information, please refer to the Beinecke Archival Description Unit Processing Manual.</p>
