Crash when completing a hunter stage as Sonic (and possibly other characters)

I have been playing through the game as only Sonic, with minimal required switching to other characters. Whenever I beat a hunting stage as Sonic, he begins to flicker as if he's taken damage, and the game crashes after the fade to black from completing the level. This fails to save progress too, which forces me to switch to Knuckles before collecting the last Emerald shard.

I completed hunting levels as Sonic (Lost World was high as fuck, but very interesting).
