Which ones we should have and how they would be obtained.

Here are the criteria for the Training Contributor Badge or the Hosting Contributor Badge. They go with similar paths as you’re proposing, just a bit more specific, which is nice

Let our goal be to have a good discussion here, formulate the outcome on the 16th of February and write a P2 for formal acceptance.

Badges are "team" and "contributor".

Be in the "team" doesn't mean you need to be a Team rep, but somebody involved in the team, in any ways (creating documentation, being team rep, doing software,...). Is like having (or had) some responsibility in any ways.

As a "contributor" is more flexible. Participating in a meeting, adding some documentation (but not leading it), contributing to a software (but not leading it)...

I still don't understand the difference between "team" and "contributor" badge. Should we have both? I mean, is it mandatory or something? Perhaps we should have the Contributor one with a list of actions, and that's it.

Each Team has both badges... and there are only those (at least by now).

There is a not a lot to do here, because all teams work the same...

(you can check my profile and see, for example, Documentation or Hosting) and you can see that I have 2 badges for those teams.

For example, for Hosting, I started having the Contributor badge because I contributed to the team (as I also have Meta, or others).

Some years later, I started as a Team Rep and I received the “Team badge”.

Something similar happened with Docs. I've been doing documentation for some time… a couple of years ago I started leading some Docs projects, so that rewarded me with the Docs Team badge.

Hope that is a good example to understand how it works…

Yep, it is, indeed. The difference lies in if you are just "making things" or you take responsibility for moving things forward, I guess. Thank you once more!

Team Badge
I like how the Training Team has defined their contributor ladder and is using it for the "Team" badge criteria.

As of now, I can see folks who are active ("performing" - using Training Team's language) under these roles mentioned in #2.

• Team Rep/Community Liaison
• Documentation Writer
• Team Meeting Coordinator
• Mentorship Coordinator
• Project Manager

Is the intent is create a badging system for the Sustainability team or a larger system that can be applied across all teams (which teams could then customize to meet the specific goals and needs)?

The latter was something mentioned in multiple community summit discussions and referenced as a goals in related issues like the following -

• Refine and extend Five for the Future #16
• Refresh and revitalize the contributor and leadership pipelines #18
• Help connect and streamline collaboration between Make Teams and community contributors #14

We are talking about creating just the Sustainability Team badges system, for now.

It will be interesting to discuss also if the assignment will be done by Team Reps every X day or if the Team/Contributor badge will have to be requested by every volunteer. I suppose the second option is easier for Team Reps (less work on top of all tasks they already have) but it has to be decided in order to introduce that information in our how to contribute handbook page. :)

I am absolutely biased on this issue, of course, so I vote for contributors to ask for the badges. But we should make some guideline like Training Team, so contributors can know exactly the degree of responsibility they can acquire within the team and the badge that corresponds to them. So, less work for Team Reps in the medium and long term, more work for all of us in short (creating these guidelines).

I'd vote also for having to make a request to a Team Rep for obtaining the badge, since we can't automate it (yet anyway).
