I couldn't find any other medium to discuss this so I just wanted to ask if the project is still being worked on? Is it an active project that is open to contributions?

We were prototyping this project as a possible replacement for the Codebuddies platform. Would you be interested in contributing to the project? I can move the project to a new GitHub organization and help the community take over maintenance :-)

Another question: Have we considered React or something more powerful for the front-end and then we can combine it with Django Rest Framework so that we can have a dedicated frontend and backend?

There is a lot of power and utility in the Django template engine, including localization, date formatting, and simple conditional logic. We can achieve quite a lot by embracing the full Django framework without needing to cobble together node libraries for common functionality like routing, internationalization, date formatting, and more. When the need arises for more dynamic parts of pages, we will use progressive enhancement to add the dynamic elements without the need to fully adopt a front-end framework like React.

In short, we want to use the whole Django framework and only add sprinkles of JavaScript when needed, ideally with a solution like HTMX or something similar.

Relatedly, the Codebuddies project was halted, in-part, due to deficiencies and complexities in the JavaScript ecosystem. The original Codebuddies platform was written in Meteor.js, which essentially lost much of it's momentum and package ecosystem. The attempted rewrite of the Codebuddies platform separated the code into a Django backend and React front-end and was not able to keep up developer momentum, in part due to having separate codebases.

I don't want to repeat the above mistakes, hence we are starting with a single, opinionated, and batteries-included development framework: Django/Wagtail.
