No log in gui or terminal

In the log section of the gui I get the error below:

Cannot show logs. "log" option is not configured correctly in your Homebridge config.json file.

Trying any of the 3 instructions for different log styles from the link produce similar errors. Also /root/.homebridge/log.txt is empty. Am I missing something simple?

I’d like to add to this. The GUI is a little hit or miss, sometimes it will load and sometimes it will not. I have 64GB of RAM and 24 cores so I’m thinking it’s not resources. I haven’t managed to successfully enable logs, the instructions aren’t making sense to me.

oznu's implementation here is working great for me.
