Each university within this MURI is dedicated to involving undergraduates in research. Below is list of current undergraduate researchers within labs and a brief description of their projects.

Brown University

  • Simon has developed useful tools for satellite tracking and MODIS data query and download, and assisted with data analysis.
  • Benjamin has been analyzing surface drifter data for characterizing mesoscale eddies in the Arctic Ocean.

California Institute of Technology

  • Emma's work relates to the dispersion of sea ice floes due to oceanic eddies. She uses a model of sea ice floes coupled to an ocean model to explore how floe size influences the width of the marginal ice zone and its energetics
  • Rohaiz's work looks at energetics related to ice, ocean, and atmospheric coupling.
  • Lana is developing native Julia geometry clippling algorithms for use in Subzero.
  • Thierno is developing an algorithm to create an realistic initial floe configuration for Subzero based on a user-given floe size distribution.

Dartmouth College

  • Karun's work within Dimitris Giannakis' group is on Markov modeling of Arctic buoy data. By analyzing the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a Markov operator estimated from buoy position data, he identifies near-invariant sets under the forward evolution of the system, and their corresponding basins of attraction. With this, we decompose the Arctic Ocean into a set of “weakly interacting" regions, and develop a probabilistic model for the evolution of surface material distribution over time.

University of Washington

  • Robin is an undergraduate research assistant working on the development of Python-based GUI for visualization of data and segmentation of oceanographycally-relevant features.

  • Krista is an undergraduate student working on numerical modeling inertial oscillations of sea ice.

University of Wisconsin - Madison

  • Evelyn and Marissa are working on computational algorithms for discrete models of sea ice floes.

Yale University

  • Megan is an undergraduate student working on examination of sea-ice floe shapes in high-resolution satellite images.
