Change "Risks" ocurrences for "Dangers" #178
Labels
Comments
It's a big change in comms strategy, but I think it makes sense. I like 'dangers' more than 'risks'. |
When I imagine replacing these occurrences: https://github.com/search?q=repo%3APauseAI%2Fpauseai-website+risk&type=code&p=1, even the ones that don't come hand in hand with the word "existential", they sound a lot worse in my mind. |
X-risk is handy jargon once you know it, and we shouldn't avoid it entirely.
But yes, "danger" captures the concern more simply and cleanly and
evocatively than "risk". Risk summons probabilities and maths, including
calculations based on solid statistics. It is important for folk to
understand prediction is hard and we have inherent uncertainties, but one
thing at a time.
If we are amending the noun in "existential risk" to "danger" then I think
the natural associated replacement concept is "extinction". There is an
"extinction danger", or a "danger of extinction".

But maybe it's just me.

It was recommended by a media advisor that we use that term in general. Do you have any complain about it?
