Allow a limited number of filters against existing search results. I'd recommend beginning with restricted values, including: area served and/or located in, checklists, drop-downs, publications, distributions, and headings* only. The user would have to pre-configure filters in the View setup, and choose whether filters are located to the left, right or above the search results on large screens. I would expect filters to be hidden by default on small screens, but expandable.
I'm a bit concerned about adding too many filters. I would likely recommend a cap of maybe 3-4 different filters available per View.
*it would make sense to add headings explicitly, by adding a specific publication code. Each pubs' headings would be treated as a unique list.
