Open Meeting EdForGood & Solidarity Educkathon(18 December, 14:00 UTC+1) [Questions and resources to orientate the discussion, feel free to add more or to share your thoughts on them.] PresentationWho are you ?I'm Diana Portela. Educational engineer and trainer, I design educational experiences with an impact on the social and environmental issues of committed organizations. In a rapidly changing world, I have been working since 2015 to convey strong values and address complex societal subjects through the most powerful tool I know: pedagogy. Entrepreneur above all, I love taking on new challenges! Learn more: Discover my website (www.dianaportela.fr( and add me on LinkedIn (www.linkedin.com/in/diana-portela) What is Ed For Good? The social and ecological transition poses a knowledge challenge to tackle the issues of equality, diversity, accessibility, climate change, energy transition... towards a new model of society that transforms our ways of consuming and producing , to live, to work, to live together. Faced with social and environmental issues, many organizations are already working every day to change the world (associations, startups, []universities[], etc.). These innovators, through their actions, have essential knowledge for the transition of our society. We must help them implement diversified educational solutions to widely disseminate this knowledge to all in order to train today's minds to become agents of change! Thus, Ed For Good brings together committed educators who have decided to help each other and train to increase their positive impact through education.

Educational engineers, designers, graphic designers, developers, project managers, students or just passionate about education invest in social causes and environmental, as well as to live a strong educational, human and supportive experience. The methodology of this Educkathon is based on the concept of design thinking, a human-centered approach to innovation. Learn more: Discover the page about the Educkathon on our website (www.edforgood.org/educkathon) Open modelsWhat is for you the interest of digital in education ?In education, the question of digital technology has become essential. For me, digital technology must respond to precise and thoughtful issues such as geographical distribution, the needs and uses of our learners, etc. In the age of artificial intelligence, the overproduction of e-learning, or increasingly gadget-based teaching methods, I wonder about the ecological cost of our training. Digital is material and has a real environmental impact. So, how can we demonstrate techno-discernment? When we talk about open model, I know that this refers directly to the internet. However, I think that this definition can be extended, especially when we mix open model and low tech! Learn more:
What open models, open education, open source, free/libre software, etc means for you ? How familiar are you with these notions ?These notions particularly interest me, and regularly allow me to question my work! I define open models as modes of organization and production that are based on the free exchange of knowledge and open source, communities and open collaboration, independence (unlike GAFAM) and transparency. Thinking about** open education** is extremely stimulating because it reveals other facets of open models: removing obstacles to access to education (entry criteria, accessibility, etc.), disseminating knowledge more widely (MOOCs, Wikipedia, etc.), allow the reuse of content (copyright, Creative Commons, Open Educational Resources (OER), etc.), collaborative production of content with learners, etc. We could extend open education with other concepts such as open collaboration (in order to open and document the creation of training), open innovation (by being part of an ecosystem where knowledge circulates), low-tech (in order to promote the sustainability of our knowledge, strengthen our collective resilience and cultural transformation)... I also ask myself some questions about these notions:
Learn more:
What do you consider as your current practices of openness ? Which one are intentionaly done ?=> You can pass this quick test (5 min) called Open Educators Factory (do not hesitate to share results): https://rd.unir.net/pub/oefMy approach is oriented towards social and environmental issues [...] the thinking around open education is not directly stated but we are clearly in it! Via projects that I carry out solo or with my collective:
Via good practices that I apply in my work:
I passed the test of Open Educators Factory:
What could be the motivations for engaged actors or organisations in open models?
How do you see interest of engaged organisation in digital commons, open models ? How do you support these organisations when they have this interest ?Ed For Good projectsWhat are most important projects for you now, between the Bootcamp, Educkathon... ?These different projects are not at the same stage of maturity! The Educkathon has already carried out 2 editions, the organization is starting to be well established, so we are above all on a development issue. The Bootcamp underwent its first MVP test which presented very positive results, so we are looking to launch our first promotion. In both cases, these projects require funding in order to continue. What are your actual intent for the future of the Educkathon ? What do you think of the role of hackathons in education ? How do you see the Educkathon in relation with your other activities ?What is interesting about this hackathon format is that it can have many benefits in the field of education: boosting projects, applying skills on a concrete project, developing transversal skills (collective intelligence, design thinking, agility, creativity, active listening, speaking, etc.), creating a network, etc. For me, this project makes complete sense with my activity: it supports impact projects with few resources and brings together a community of committed educators! Regarding my Educkathon, as I explain in the report (www.linkedin.com/posts/diana-portela\_recommandations-educkathon-solidaire-2023-activity-7138490835767070721-2qxr?), this event required 15 days of work for the organization and almost 4 days of work for the mentoring (carried out 100% voluntarily for two consecutive years, without counting volunteer time some participants). In order to ensure future editions, it is necessary to find funding in order to pay at least the organizational time, or even the mentoring time. More broadly, a request is emerging from participants: to organize face-to-face Educkathons with more local projects. It is therefore necessary to think about the best way to disseminate the methodology for organizing such an event! In this sense, I would like to propose a MOOC on the organization of an educkathon / hackathon in order to transmit this methodology, but also to open up reflection on the modularity of this format through collaboration with other organizations (online vs. face-to-face, 24 hours vs. 48 hours , broad audience vs. expert, adaptation of the methodology according to the territory...). In order to create this MOOC, it is necessary to find funding. Learn more:
In your bootcamp description, you speak about a software database to let people choose their tools. Could you share a link to this database ?I would love to share it, but this tools database hasn't been created yet! The objective behind this database is not only to list digital educational tools (as some already exist), but to highlight open source tools, accessible and with a low environmental footprint. |

Following the discussion, Diana has the intent to apply for this grant, for which the applicaiton end up the 1st April. I suggested to rediscuss about it at least one or 2 time in order to prepare the application. |

Discussion with the project holder of the (french) initiative EdForGood following their Educkathon in November. Some interaction around the topic of hackathons and this educational orientation, she's considering the continuation of the project to include co-organizers and find an economical model after 2 events organized by voluntary work. Recently launched, I suggested the NGI Zero Commons Fund as a potential way to find some financial support.
A fund for digital commons and open models, she does not work (explicitly) on open education but as they collaborate with engaged actors in the development of educational projects through digital, some relations and interests can appear.
In order to see if and how they may pretend to the NGI Commons Fund, one main idea of this discussion would be to understand their existing open practices, their awareness on open education and the relevance for their organisation of a more structured open models approach to fulfil their mission.
EdForGood being a project « to federate engaged pedagogists », with an increase of their openness capabilities they may support and explore skills development of open educators within their own network and organisations around while helping in the development of digital commons and open resources in various contexts.
