Currently we use depth integrated light intensity to determine phytoplankton growth rate, but growth rate is a non-linear function if light. By using the formulation of Evans & Parslow (1985) we can hopefully improve the (too low) productivity for deep mixed layers and low light conditions.

When we have the new vertical coordinates this will be obsolete. This was meant to improve the simulation of PP when the vertical resolution is low. I don't think there will be an effect if vertical resolution is reasonable in the euphotic zone.
