Right now, the windows version has a portable version of latex with it, stripped down from texlive, so that it isn't necessary to have latex installed as well. The linux version instead looks for the pdflatex executable and complains if it is not found. Since the stripped version is only 7-ish megabytes, it would be good to make a similar version for linux, to avoid external dependencies.
