Is it because of the 4.x 5e system or do the custom senses break the ui for configuring senses in a character sheet only for me?

Not just you. It has broken due to a dnd5e system change. Looks like it's also become much more complicated to mod, so might take me a bit to workaround the changes. In the meantime, you can use the reset in the Configure Senses menu to remove the custom senses and go back to the base senses.

Simpler than I thought if the change is made in the dnd5e system code: foundryvtt/dnd5e#4976

I'll probably make a release to remove custom senses from Custom D&D 5e until this change is included in a future dnd5e system release.

I've actually fixed this by not using the dnd5e's config, so you can update to 1.2.9 and still use custom senses in dnd5e 4.1+.
