Help configuring sfwbar

Hello, I really like the attention you give to sfwbar and how sfwbar integrates better with labwc, but there is a big obstacle that prevents me from migrating from waybar to sfwbar: configuring!

I've read the manual pages several times, but I can't figure out how to actually configure sfwbar, even using sfwbar.config as a reference.

I don't want to give up on sfwbar, so is there a configuration file with ALL the options that sfwbar supports?

I don't know exactly how this will help me, but I imagine it will make it easier to understand the syntax of the configuration file, since sfwbar.config doesn't seem to cover all the options that sfwbar supports.

And from what I understand, the visual is configurable using GTK/CSS, so these options are documented in GTK/CSS? If so, where can I find this documentation?

The configs use most of the supported options currently. The tricky bit is that some configuration happens within the included files and you need to change copy and edit these in order to effect the config changes. A lot of the work in the current release cycle is going towards breaking this requirement (I.e. implementing configuration of widgets from the main config file). In the meantime, the best approach may be to post what you're trying to change and myself or one of other users can help with the relevant config options.

So, since I opened this discussion, I went back and re-read the manual pages and the default configuration file and indeed the configuration file covers most of the available options. Fortunately, I can now understand the configuration file better, I even understand the included files (they use the same syntax as the default sfwbar configuration file, right?).

My initial frustration with sfwbar was due to the fact that I tried to create a configuration file completely from scratch and manually (by reading the manual page and editing the file from scratch). The real problem was with the visuals...

Basically, I managed to correctly configure almost all of the options available here, but as I was creating a file from scratch, I didn't configure any of the visuals with CSS (because I assumed that in the absence of these options, sfwbar would use the default values) and so I got a completely broken bar.

Now, I split the configuration file into two: sfwbar.config and sfwbar.css.

In sfwbar.css, I copied the values from the default sfwbar configuration file (Eventually I want to configure sfwbar.css from scratch as well, but I still don't know where to find all the available options).

And in sfwbar.config, I'm trying to make my configuration file from scratch, but always looking at the default configuration as a reference (I'm kind of getting it, except that I still haven't figured out how to put some widgets (like the date and the systray) in the right-hand corner).

In the meantime, the best approach may be to post what you're trying to
change and myself or one of other users can help with the relevant config
options.

Indeed. Since I was able to better understand the configuration file, I even tried to delete this discussion, but GitHub doesn't allow it. Anyway, thanks again for your attention. :D

Indeed, configuring the bar from scratch would be quite painful. You really do need to specify a CSS stylesheet, perhaps I should add a feature to load a default if there is no .css file specified and #CSS section is absent.

In general, if you have any ideas for making configuration more accessible, do feel free to share your ideas. #257 is a good place to discuss this.

Sure. As I use sfwbar, I'll try to elaborate on ideas to improve how to configure sfwbar.
