Setting ID's vertically?

Is there a way to enter layer names in the first column and the content horizontally or referencing value by their name instead of the 'nth' value? It would make it easier to manage string dictionaries. :)

+1 for this request. Just being able to go vertically instead of horizontally would be super helpful for managing larger documents.
