This came up in the context of https://bbpteam.epfl.ch/project/issues/browse/MMB2022-122 because, currently, the weights generation step requires an invocation of a simulation and a single step to create a report, so that the layout of the compartments is known.
At the same time, it has come up many times that it would be great if there was a library to create the bidirection mapping between compartments in reports, and the locations on morphologies.
My understanding is that it's code like this: https://bbpgitlab.epfl.ch/hpc/sim/neurodamus-core/-/blob/main/hoc/Cell.hoc#L316
That is actually doing the compartment splitting, so I can see how this would be hard without invoking NEURON (which might be the best solution?)
I think this would benefit:
1 scientists - since they wouldn't have to create ad-hoc methods, and learn the pitfals the hard way
2 the viz team, since for visualization needs, they (ex: I'm pretty sure Brion had code for this, but it has to load a report to know the compartment count per morphology section, iirc)
3 NSE since we could build tools the scientists (and others) can use
